MANSON, James Bolivar, N.E.A.C., L.G. (1879 - 1945)
Painter in oil of portraits, landscapes and flowers, influenced by Impressionism. Born in London on 26th June 1879. Studied art at Heatherley's, Lamberth School of Art, and in Paris under J. P. Laurens at the Acadamie Julian. Member and Secretary of the Camden Town Group 1911, and also exhibited with the L.G. becoming a member in 1914. Exhibited with the N.E.A.C. from 1915, member 1927. A close friend of Lucien Pissarro, they formed the Monarro Group in 1920 aimed at promoting the Impressionist tradition. First one man show held in 1923 at the Leicester Galleries. Exhibited at the R.A. from 1939. Assistant Keeper of the Tate Gallery 1917-1930 and Director 1930-38. Wrote a number of books on art. Died in London on 3rd July 1945.
