(JOHN) FREDERICK TAYLER

(b Borehamwood, Herts, 30 April 1802; d London, 20 June 1889). English painter and printmaker. He was one of 17 children whose father died while he was a child. The family were well connected and Tayler attended both Eton and Harrow. He subsequently studied at Sass's Academy, London, and then at the Royal Academy Schools. He completed his artistic training in Paris under Horace Vernet and then went to Rome. Around 1826 he shared a studio in Paris with Richard Parkes Bonington. Tayler exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1830 and 1865 and although principally a watercolourist he took lessons in oil painting from William Powell Frith. In 1831 he became an associate of the Society of Painters in Water-Colours and a member in 1834.
